Mission

The mission of the Counseling Department for Student Development is to provide services to students that will help them achieve their integral development, as well as to provide consultation, training, presentation, and outreach programming to faculty and university personnel. Its mission is linked with that of the Institution which promotes the integral development of the student. To accomplish its purpose, the Department offers individual and group counseling, psychometric assessment, crisis intervention, educational and career counseling, outreach activities, consultation, services to special populations, internship training, teaching, research, pre-enrollment orientation activities, freshman orientation, evaluation and supervision. The Department is totally committed to providing an environment for students that will help them adjust successfully to the university by fully developing, feeling accepted, valued, and integrated into the Institution. The Counseling Department for Student Development reports to the Dean of Students.  The mission of the Dean of Students Office is to offer quality services for students to meet their educational, emotional, social, academic, physical, cultural, recreational, and health needs. As a result of the delivering of these services, the Deanship promotes the integral development of the student.  To provide these services, this unit has programs in the following areas: financial assistance, housing, athletics, health services, disabilities services, international and exchange education, employment and placement, career services, peer counseling, child care, quality of life, student organizations, and student center.  The Department is closely linked to these units that provide services in the areas previously mentioned and is separate and distinct from units involved in making decisions regarding admissions, discipline, curricular or administrative issues. Students that request the services can gain support for their problems and will receive the full attention of counselors, social workers, psychologists and/or be referred to other services on campus or agencies or programs off-campus.
